The holiday season is a time for giving, but that doesn't have to mean falling into the trap of excessive consumerism, or the negative environmental impact of over-consuming. Here's four easy tips for celebrating this season while staying committed to sustainability and environmental conservation.
It’ll be more heartfelt and sentiment because you made it. But also it doesn’t contribute to global production systems, which burn fossil fuels and cause pollution. Find that special talent of yours, or learn a new craft via youtube, endless opportunities!
Maybe you don’t feel artistic enough, that’s fair. What about sharing time with loved ones? How about tickets to a show or concert? Laser tag or a day at the trampoline park! Experiences are usually zero-waste scenarios and create fond memories. After all, the most valuable thing any of us can ever give is our time, right?
Okay but you just know you need a physical item under the tree Christmas morning? Then try getting something useful? If they’re a Disney fanatic, why not a Mickey waffle maker? Or a beautiful scarf made of recycled fabrics? Items that have utility can still make excellent sustainable gifts!
And lastly, try to shop small and eco-friendly when possible. We all love adorable little things sometimes, and there’s no shame in treating ourselves to occasional treasures that have no real “utility”. But if you are in the market for trinkets, try local brands or artists. These brands offer more impact in your community and are often ethical by default.
Happy holidays and stay green!
